Matching Champagne And Food

Champagne is regularly served as an aperitif or as a toast at the end of a meal, so it is often overlooked when it comes to food. However, because Champagne is naturally acidic, it makes a really good food match – and not just for oysters and caviar as you might expect, but for a number of different foods.

Non Vintage Champagne

This is the cheapest and probably most common type of Champagne available. Non-vintage Champagne is blended from wines from several years and, in doing so, this ensures that a consistent style is achieved. Non-vintage Champagne is younger and, generally, fruiter than other Champagnes, so is a perfect match for slightly lighter foods, such as egg or mushroom based dishes, hard cheeses, pasta or risotto (particularly with a cream or mushroom based sauce), vegetables, fish and seafood. Strange as it may seem, non-vintage Champagne also goes really well with fish and chips, as the acidity of the Champagne helps cut through the oiliness.

Vintage Champagne

Vintage Champagne is made from a blend of wines from a particular year, when the quality of the wine is good enough to declare a vintage. Because it has been aged for a few years, it has as slightly more complex structure than a non-vintage Champagne, so can stand up to stronger, fuller flavours. For example, all types of fish and seafood, especially when accompanied with a creamy sauce are a perfect match for vintage Champagne, as are lightly smoked foods, cheese, duck, caviar and poultry with a rich sauce.

Blanc de Blancs

Champagne is made from Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier, which are red grapes, along with Chardonnay, which is a white grape. Blanc de Blancs, however, is Champagne which is made exclusively from the Chardonnay grape. This is a rare style of Champagne and goes well with lighter style foods and, in particular, sushi, oysters, goats cheese, gently flavoured white fish and vegetables.

Blanc de Noirs

This is Champagne made from just the red grapes, Pinot Noir and / or Pinot Meunier. If you come across a bottle, try teaming it with full flavoured foods such as meat and cheese.

Demi Sec

Demi sec style Champagne is sweeter than traditional brut champagne and is a good match for foie gras or foods that have a slight edge of sweetness to them. It also goes well with desserts (as long as they arent too sweet), as well as red berries – particularly strawberries.

Ros

Ros based Champagne goes very well with seafood, including prawns and lobster, or slightly pinker style meats including lamb, ham and game.

Healthy Hotcakes – a recipe for oat pancakes

Low GI Diet Recipe – Oat Pancakes

These are for a filling low GI breakfast, which means that your blood sugar level won’t skyrocket when you eat them, and that breakfast will keep you satisfied for most of the morning. The original idea comes from Staffordshire in the UK where they are traditional, but dying out. In Staffordhsire there used to be shops devoted entirely to these pancakes, and they were cooked side by side with bacon and eggs on the same iron griddle.

Ingredients

20 grams wholemeal flour

100 grams oat flour

10 ml cooking oil

1 egg

milk

10 ml baking powder (=generous teaspoonful)

Variations

These quantities are not particularly important and should be varied according to your taste. The wheat flour is in there to make the pancake lighter – you could do without it. The oil is there to make the pancake less likely to stick to the pan, and could be eliminated. The baking flour lightens the pancake (obviously) and you can substitute yeast to leaven the mixture, and while that is the traditional way it slows down the cooking process. If you are not allowed salt, yeast would be preferable to baking powder, but it’s a pain to do the raising. You could probably double the flour content (staying with one egg) which would make the pancakes less easily broken. You can also add a little porridge oats, shredded ginger, cinnamon, and so on. You can use water instead of milk. Nothing is sacrosanct !

Method

Mix all the ingredients in a bowl, gradually adding the milk. Small lumps don’t matter. As the batter will thicken as it stands, you may need more milk than you initially added.

The batter should be liquid enough to pour a thin layer into your frying pan. Wait until bubbles break through the pancake and its surface ceases to glisten. Then turn over and cook a little more.

Accompaniments

These oat pancakes are very versatile – delicious with bacon and egg.

Or else a little marmalade (better than jam because its strong flavour means you eat less).

Or plain yoghurt (all the natural sugars have been used up in its fermentation, so low GI). Or apple puree. Or sliced apple, oranges etc.

Foods You Can Eat To Boost Collagen And Reduce Wrinkles

When you are a child, skin is soft and supple. There aren’t any wrinkles. Skin is perfect. In your late twenties, wrinkles start to form. Tiny lines, depressed into otherwise supple skin appear. As you get older, the lines deepen and more lines form. Collagen supports your skin. As collagen breaks down and diminishes with age, the supporting structure beneath the skin decreases and skin sags and wrinkles form.

What can you do about collagen? Some foods help boost your body’s collagen production, so include these in your diet.

1. Pigs trotters
Pigs feet sound gross. They are reputed to help you look younger because they contain collagen. At very least, your body, after breaking down the food would be able to reuse the nutrients in collagen production. Stewed pigs trotters in black sauce is a Chinese delicacy.

2. Soya Bean Milk, tofu and anything that is based on soy.
Soy contains genistein, an isoflavone. This isoflavone blocks enzymes that would otherwise destroy collagen.

3. Garlic.
Garlic contains sulfur which helps your body produce collagen. If you are concerned about garlic breath, chew some parsley to freshen your breath. Garlic contains taurine
and lipoid acid which support damaged collagen fibers.

4. Tomatos
These are very rich in the antioxidant lycopene which inhibits collagenases. Collagenases are enzymes that destroy collagen.
Antioxidants neutralize free radicals which would otherwise destroy the collagen and supporting structure of your skin, so taking foods with antioxidants

5. Fish
This is rich in omega fatty acids that keeps skin soft and supple.

6. Oranges and lemons
Citrus fruits are rich in vitamin C which will help your body produce collagen.

7. Dark green leafy vegetables
Dark green veggies like spinach contain vitamin C for collagen production. Spinach also contains iron and a whole host of vitamins to keep your body young and healthy.

8. Lean meat.
Food that has lysine and proline promote collagen and lean meat contain these, so the meat in pig’s feet should help. Maybe the collagen in pig’s feet would work too.

Coffee Is One Of The Most Popular Drinks In The World

Coffee is without doubt one of the hottest drinks on this planet – perhaps because its so versatile. From easy coffees like espresso and filter espresso, to extra complex recipes like cappuccino, coffee may be as easy or as complicated as you want it to be, as anyone who has positioned an order in a espresso shop not too long ago can attest.

Folkss motives for drinking coffee fluctuate widely. Some just want the caffeine to maintain them going, and are pleased with espresso espresso shots – nasty tasting, but they offer you a burst of energy. More and more folks, though, are ingesting coffee not for the power rush, but for the taste.

So how do you make the most effective-tasting espresso? A really giant part of the answer is freshness. In general, the more energizing the espresso, the nicer it should be. Prompt coffee is the least contemporary of all, as it’s espresso that was made a long time ago and then had the water drained from it. That is the rationale why so many individuals go to espresso retailers: freshly-ground espresso is solely so much nicer.

Grinding espresso at dwelling by hand may be very difficult, which is why it is much better to get a coffee machine. There’s generally little difference between the mechanisms in residence espresso machines and those used in espresso retailers, meaning that you can achieve the same freshly-floor taste. All you’ll want to do is purchase your favorite variety of beans, put them in, and press the button. You wouldnt anticipate it, but even the most cost effective fresh beans will style miles better than essentially the most luxurious prompt coffee. Simply attempt it and see.

For the true espresso connoisseur, although, the beans you employ within the machine will matter. Good espresso beans are surprisingly exhausting to come back by in a grocery store – you’ll in all probability have more luck buying them from coffee outlets that sell their own beans, or from small unbiased specialist outlets and road markets. Be careful, though, as this can get costly very fast – make sure you strive making espresso from a small sample of any beans before you purchase a bigger supply.

Alternative Ways To Treat Fibroids Naturally – What To Drink When You Have Fibroid Tumors

If you are looking for alternative ways to treat fibroids naturally, one approach to consider is to take a look at what you drink. Many women are very aware that what they are eating can contribute to their condition and that dietary modification can really help to begin to relieve symptoms. However, many will overlook what they are drinking and this is just as important as the foods you eat. Indeed, it is possible to undo all the good work you might be doing by changing other areas of your life.

Certain drinks are not only beneficial for good, overall health, but can promote fibroid healing when used alongside other alternative ways to treat fibroids naturally, such as detoxification, cleansing, taking exercise, relaxation and, of course, eating the right kinds of foods.

The first drink to consider is the humble glass of water. Filtered water is the best possible daily drink and you should aim to have at least 2 liters each day, or until your urine is clear as this is important for cleansing. You can also increase the cleansing effect by adding a few drops of lemon juice or a pinch of cayenne pepper.

Water is great for preventing the build up of toxins which can be a contributory factor in fibroid growth. By flushing the kidneys adequately, this helps to prevent the build up of kidney stones which, in turn, can place an extra burden on the liver. This can result in the liver performing poorly and not excreting the toxins which can help form fibroids.

Providing you are not prone to yeast overgrowth or fungal infections, unsweetened diluted fruit juices are generally fine in moderation. In addition, drinking certain “green” juices can be excellent alternative ways to treat fibroids naturally – try wheatgrass, barley green juice and aloe vera juice.

Certain natural vegetable juices are also extremely good for fibroid sufferers as they are packed with antioxidants and vitamins. Try juicing carrots, beetroot and celery for great effect.

Within the context of a good overall system for treating fibroids naturally, ensuring that you are having the right kinds of drinks can make the crucial difference between success and failure.

Written by a nutritionalist, health writer and former fibroids sufferer herself, the system I recommend is groundbreaking, and I am confident that you will finally feel that you have found something that will work for you.

La Gomera Island Life

Those who prefer to cook will be pleased to learn that Santiagos supermarkets are well-stocked and realistically priced.

In addition, the villages many cafs, bars and restaurants, several of which are situated next to the small, picturesque port, offer a choice of anglicised, and more local, fare – enabling you to select from a light snack or a multi-course tapas meal. (Be warned: many Gomerans think of the latter, as the former.)

For a special treat, you may also wish to enjoy one of the five restaurants at the luxurious Tecina Hotel and Golf Complex, which is owned and managed by the islands first family.

That family, the Olsens, is inextricably linked with Gomeran history, dating back more than a century. No one knows what prompted Norwegian Thomas Olsen, and later, his son Fred (father of the companys current President) to begin buying land in the area, in 1904. One assumes that he simply fell in love – with the island, and its inhabitants.

Despite turning a considerable profit – by securing control of the islands freshwater springs, and purchasing huge tracts of land at rock-bottom rates – the Olsens brought (and indeed, continue to bring) if not wealth, then at least prosperity, to the island: in those early days by, amongst other good works, establishing a functional irrigation system and opening the islands first school. And, more recently, as Gomeras biggest employer.

Today, the island survives and thrives almost entirely on tourism. Which is hardly surprising. For, in stark counterpoint to the more exotic pursuits mentioned earlier, its a place where you can also enjoy the familiar comforts of home not least: BBC TV and Radio 4; water direct from the tap; and a high standard of accommodation.

You dont even have to adjust your watch when you arrive.

In fact, tucked away in your exceptionally well-appointed apartment, thered be little to remind you that youre actually holidaying on an extinct volcano.

Save, of course, for that sublime climate.

Christmas Food In Barcelona

Christmas is just around the corner and Barcelona is definitely preparing to get ready for the happiest season of the year.

Since the beginning of November, everyday new Christmas lights have been put on the streets to bring the festive atmosphere to the city. Even by walking through the smaller streets in Barceloneta or Raval area gives you already the Christmas feeling a month before. But not only do the streets become brighter, also the food selection get wider. Barcelona has many various kitchens to offer. So which one are the most traditional Catalonian dishes during the winter months..

As Barcelona is on the Mediterranean coast, obviously the seafood dishes are important part of Christmas food. Usually the Christmas dinner starts with salmon or prawn dish, which is followed by a hot bowl of homemade soup. The main meal consists traditionally of roast lamb and seafood, either cod or shellfish.
During the colder winter months soup is quite common dish for dinner time. The most famous one is sopa de galets which contains meat, vegetables and pasta.

Spain is a well-known chestnut exporter, therefore you cant miss every autumn-winter the roasted chestnut sellers on the streets. If you want to make it yourself then Boqueria market at La Ramblas is good place to get these fresh and for a good price. For roasting you just need oven, knife and water to be able to prepare chestnuts yourself at home.

The most popular dessert in Christmas time is turron. It is made of roasted almonds, honey and eggs. This sweet, of Arabic origin, can be found in the bigger supermarkets with different flavours. The best value you would find is probably in some smaller family stores on the side street, which are generally run by people from Middle-East.

Both polvorones and marzipans are types of sweets that are more in demand during the Christmas period. Polvorones are rich, crumbly cookies which mainly consist of almonds. As well as many other sweets`, todays gourmet varieties of marzipans are also mainly made of sugar and almonds, or in cheaper options rice flour or potato starch.

A very common dessert amongst Catalan people is prune crema. It is made of red wine, dried prunes, caster sugar, double cream and egg yolks. People use it often together with fruit or some crispy topping, which makes it even tastier.

To experience the taste of Mediterranean food, Barcelona is certainly one of those great cities that are worth to visit during Christmas and New Years period.
If you are looking for a nice budget place to stay then there is good selection of rental accommodation. One of the options could be BCN Loft, which offers cheap rooms in shared apartments. BCN Loft apartments are located all over Barcelonas city centre, so you are always close by to all the main attractions and best restaurants.
