Becoming a successful chef requires much more effort and hard work than generally thought. There are two ways to get into this industry, by directly taking up a job in kitchens where you are at the mercy of the master chef to teach you the techniques and the second way is to get enrolled into a Culinary Education center where you are taught about all the aspects of cooking industry.
Apart from the techniques that you learn from both these sources there are few more qualities that decide the level that you can achieve in your career.
*Love for Food: – As a chef you should have a keen sense of taste and smell of food. If you do not possess this sense you will not be able to achieve success in your culinary career. Being a chef also requires a lot of determination and commitment and should be able to hold it throughout to ensure that you don’t lose the charm or the passion for your job.
*Presentation: – Making good food is not the end of the story; it has to be presented in front of the customer in the best possible way. Good food with poor presentation is perhaps one of the worst things that you can do as a chef. The way your dishes are presented is what makes an impact on the customers.
*Organizational Skills: – Making good food requires ample planning before the cooking process even starts. Master Chefs are also responsible for controlling the cost and manpower management; in simple words as a master chef you are responsible for all the aspects of running a kitchen.
*Team work: – Running a kitchen is not one man’s job, but it’s a team game. If you are working at lower level in the hierarchy you should be aware of how to coordinate with your superior, similarly if you are working at a higher level you should be able to get the work done by your team.
*Stamina: – Working in kitchen can get stretched to late nights and get quite intense during the weekends. Also kitchen work is mostly done while standing, which makes it a pretty tedious job. So if you are a person with weak stamina you may not be able to sustain this career.
A career as a chef is not just a matter of selecting a career but a passion and a “calling”. If you want a career just to make money, then perhaps this career is not for you. It is essential that you have all the above mentioned qualities in order to become a successful Chef.
